Spike Jonze

In today's lesson we watched a number of music video directed by Spike Jonze. We watched "Da Funk" by Daft Punk, "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim, "Buddy Holly" by Weezer, "Whats Up Fatlip?" by Fatlip and "California" by Wax. We were watching to see if there was an auteur theory which is where a director has a signature style. A signature style would be recognisable by audiences in a number of the same director's videos.

After watching a few videos we started to notice that there was an emphasis on the one character in each video. In the Fatboy Slim video the whole video was focused on the man working as a night porter in a posh hotel, he was the only person in the video. This theme is similar in the 'Da Funk" video although there were more people involved in the video there was a main focus on the main character which was a dog man. In the "Wax" video there was a main focus on the man who was on fire which further emphasizes Jonze's hook of focusing on one person all the way through.

We also noticed that in the videos we watched, Spike Jonze doesn't use the actual artists of the songs - he uses actors instead. Christopher Walken is used in the Fatboy Slim video to play the night porter who dances around the hotel. In the Notorious B.I.G video they use an actor to play B.I.G. This was again used in the Daft Punk video. In this video they use a man dressed as a dog.

In all these videos Spike Jonze uses one main location for the whole video. In the 'California' video the man on fire is only seen running through the city. This is the same as the 'Da Funk' video where the dog man is seen walking around New York- both in one main location. In the Fatboy Slim video the only location you see is the hotel where the night porter dances. This shows that Spike Jonze prefer to use one single location rather than changing to other clips of different locations.
