Country Music Conventions

Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me

This country song is of the unconventional sort; mainly due to the fact that it is not related to the stereotypes country music is associated with. Firstly the video is similar to a pop video and is targeting a modern and younger audience.

The video does not include what you would expect to see in a country music video, for example it is not set in an outside location or on a farm, instead it is set in a city. It does not include other stereotypical props you would associate such as cowboy hats, hay, barns and an instrument (the acoustic guitar is not seen in this video).

In this video they sell the artist in a very different way to other country videos. They show Taylor Swift as a typical American school girl whereas in most country videos they would show the artist as a deep south American.

Dolly Parton - Jolene

Dolly Parton's "Jolene" music video meets the genre characteristics of a country music video as it has all what you would expect to see in such a video. For example, the main location of the video is set at a barn, where you can see someone playing the acoustic guitar whilst Parton sings.

The guitarist in the video is dressed in a typical country outfit, this can be seen by the tassels round his neck. You can also see this by his footwear, he is wearing boots which is associated with a typical country outfit.

Dolly Parton has a deep southern accent which is in keeping with the stereotype of country music. When comparing the two artists you can see an obvious difference, this is mostly due to the fact that time has moved on and that styles and fashions are always changing.
